uh-oh, is your blog your landing page?

Should you have your always changing blog as your “home” landing page? Should you have a static page be the first thing your visitors see? It may not be an age old question, but inquiring minds want to know: is having your blog as your landing page a personal preference or strategic move?
One of the main (if not the only) reason people put their blogs on their front page is that search engines love new content. They get all hot and bothered when they poke their heads into your neck of the woods and see that somethin’ has changed.

The other reason people love having their blog front and center is because when their audience shows up on their site, they’re probably looking for new content a.k.a your blog and not necessarily your contact page or your about us page.

…but, is it really the best move? Personally, my landing page is my blog, but I’ve had first time folks on there trying to figure out what the heck it is I do. That my friend, is a problem. When you have a static page, you can negate the problem that I have – people will actually know what the hell you do.

There is a way you can have the best of both worlds. The first way is to customize your starting page so that it has the latest post from your blog. This way, you’re satiating Google’s curiosity and the needs of your loyal visitors, but you’re giving yourself enough space on that page to tell new visitors what you do and how you can benefit them.

The second way is to utilize your masthead or the area around it. If you can concisely tell folks who you are, who you’re for and what you do – you may be able to make an esthetic adjustment on your blog page.

The third way is to stick the information in your sidebar. Personally, I hate this option because you’re going to junk up your page.

    • Nice post, Dawn, and a curious issue. For the most part, I admire anyone who has their blog as their home page, because that challenges them to stay truly in the moment and up to date. I’ve not been that brave, so far.

      • Mary Ruth – you’re right! Depending on your ability to keep things up to date, having your blog as your home page could definitely be detrimental!
